Meta Platforms Inc. is conducting a major acquisition, announcing that it will purchase Rivos Inc., a new chip company focusing on developing graphics processors for artificial intelligence reasoning (GPUs). This aims to strengthen the semiconductor research and development capabilities within Meta and enhance its control over its artificial intelligence-based facilities.

According to people familiar with the matter, the specific terms of the transaction have not been made public, but Rivos was seeking $400 million to $500 million in new funds shortly before the purchase, with a valuation of more than $2 billion. Located in Santa Clara, Rivos focuses on providing efficient inference chips for AI models, especially in small and medium-sized deployment scenarios, which is more cost-effective than the high-level products of Nvidia, the leader in the market.

Meta already has an internal team, Meta Training and Inference Accelerator, which is developing its own AI chips, but it still relies on a large number of outbound GPUs, especially NVIDIA (Nvidia) products. This purchase not only saves costs, but also accelerates Meta's advance towards the "superintelligence" goal, namely, to develop an AI system that can complete tasks at the human level or better.

This is also the strategic layout of Meta in the semiconductor and core AI technology fields after purchasing important companies such as WhatsApp and Oculus VR, showing that the company's efforts to master future technological development leadership and enhance market competitiveness.
